Stockholm urban region is growing and it is predicted that its population will be about 2.6 million in 2025. Presently Stockholm has 8 metro lines with a length of 150 km and 100 stations. Moreover, there are 8 suburban trains with a length of 84 km and 3 lines of light rail transit with a length of 36 km.
The Regional Government of Stockholm has started to build new lines of metro with 20 km length and 11 stations in 2018.
An interview was made with Civil Engineer Magnus Lundin, Technical Director of the New Metro Lines Department of Stockholm Metro, concerning the progress of construction of the new metro lines in Stockholm.
Magnus Lundin: Stockholm is one of the fastest growing urban regions in Europe. That is why we need more housing and efficient public transportation. The metro network will be expanded with 3 lines to accommodate more passengers. This project is so important that the Government, the Stockholm Region and Municipalities have joined to fund this project.
Magnus Lundin said: 100 % of the rail route will be built as tunnels. Concerning Sofia Station which is located at the depth of 100 meter under- ground, we need to use new systems for stations like Sofia which are located very deep underground. In Sofia Station we are using 8 large and fast lifts to transfer passengers up and down within 30 seconds. If we used escalators instead of lifts, the transfer time would have been 5 minutes.
About the construction phases of the new metro lines, Lundin said: phase 1 is to construct the work tunnel. In order to build rail tunnel, we dig the work tunnel from the ground level. In  phase 2, we build rail tunnels and stations. In phase 3, we install technical equipment and test the running of trains. Presently we are busy with phase 1 and 2.
Magnus Lundin on sustainable development of Stockholm Metro said: We are actively working with CEEQUAL sustainable development system to construct the new metro lines.  Sustainable development factors are leading and controlling all phases of planning, construction and the future operation of the new metro lines.
